Latest Breakthroughs This Week
Here’s the most important breakthroughs and advancements we spotted in the healthcare technology space this week.
Virtual Command Center: Cleveland Clinic has implemented an AI-based tool that is allowing the organization to automate and optimize critical decisions. It features three modules; Hospital 360 for forecasting capacity and managing beds, staffing matrix for volume predictions and OR stewardship for OR scheduling and resource optimization.
Going Big on Gen AI: Washington based Providence is allocating 5% of its fixed budget to generative AI in 2024. It has already launched ProvidenceChat, its own version of ChatGPT, for 120,000 staff on December 1. This AI tool ensures private use without data sharing concerns. Additionally, Providence has also developed five in-house AI solutions and is working with Microsoft on a co-pilot project.
Policy: A group of bipartisan senators on Wednesday reintroduced a bill that aims to remove barriers to telemental healthcare for Medicare Beneficiaries. This would remove requirements that telemental health patients see an in-person provider within six months of receiving services via telehealth.
HealthTech Funding: Cognito Therapeutics secures $35 million to further develop Spectris, a headset aimed at Alzheimer’s patients. Spectris employs gamma frequency light and sound to counter cognitive decline, stimulating brain activity and potentially preserving brain structure.
Stats: Gen AI use among healthcare workers is on the rise. 40% of "pink-collar" healthcare workers, like physicians and nurses, now use generative AI weekly, up from 11% in five months. Additionally, 51% of white-collar healthcare professionals, such as executives and researchers, employ the technology weekly, a 19% increase in the same period.

What Is A Healthcare API Ecosystem?
A healthcare API ecosystem is a network of interconnected software applications and platforms that communicate via APIs. It facilitates data and service exchange among various systems, devices, and stakeholders such as such as hospitals, clinics, electronic health record (EHR) systems, telemedicine platforms, wearable devices, and third-party developers.
The goal of a healthcare API ecosystem is to enable seamless integration and interoperability between different healthcare technologies, improving efficiency, accessibility, and innovation in healthcare delivery and management.

Uncovering Digital Patient Preferences
Having multiple patient facing applications may not be the best strategy going forward when it comes to taking steps for enhancing patient engagement levels.
What patients want: A recent study has found that while an average hospital utilizes upto six different patient applications, 89% patients want a single healthcare platform to manage all their healthcare needs. Moreover, 50% would prefer a mobile app over a website.
What patients increasingly want is a unified mobile experience — a dedicated hub that connects them to all aspects of their healthcare — from scheduling appointments to billing to communicating directly with healthcare providers. What they don't want is more apps to take up space on their smartphones and clutter their lives.
The way forward: Custom healthcare app development can help healthcare organizations meet the patients needs and wants while ensuring interoperability with existing health software.
